Cruise Ships Have Brought Over 200,000 Tourists to Ensenada in 2016

Tourism in the Baja region has spiked considerably during 2016 and could lead to a historic year for the industry.

TIJUANA.- During the first quarter of 2016, Baja's influx of tourists has been steadily increasing when it comes to air and vehicular travel, as well as tourist attractions visits. This information was confirmed by the Baja California's State Government, via the state's Secretariat of Tourism (SECTURE).

Over 7 million people have used the state's main highways, like the Tijuana-Ensenada and Tijuana-Mexicali's scenic road, among others. At Tijuana's international airport, over 19 thousand flights have been performed, which points at a movement of over a million and a half people.

The Secretary of Tourism, Oscar Escobedo, stated that so far in 2016, every tourist destination in the state has registered an increase in their hotel occupancy, noting an important affluence of foreign visitors, mainly in places like Rosarito, San Felipe and Ensenada.

Just in January of this year, a hotel occupancy of 38% registered, and in April's last report the numbers rose to 51%, which reflects a 12% increase in statewide hotel occupancy, he added.

Escobedo also said that this growth came about thanks to the constant promotion done to Baja California as a tourism destination, both inside and outside of Mexico, which motivates people to choose this region as an economically viable option for a vacation.

Ensenada is positioning itself as one of Mexico's top seaports, being the second most visited cruise ship destination in Mexico for the fourth year in a row, and the first in the Pacific region; over 200 thousand passengers in 106 different ships docked in Ensenada, leaving benefits for over $50 million USD to the city.

The Secretary said that "Baja California is living its greatest period as a tourist destination in the last eight years, which to us comes as the result of the coordinated work of the state's private and Government sectors; because of this, we will continue pushing every action that will allow us to have a closer relationship with the private sector."

A myriad of different events will take place in the region over the next few months, when a bigger influx of tourism is expected, especially on Mexican and U.S. holidays, which usually leave high marks in economic benefits and hotel occupancy for several tourist destinations.

Next Monday, May 30, the U.S. will be celebrating Memorial Weekend, a good period for the tourist industry on this side of the border.

Finally, Escobedo considered that, if these numbers carry on as they have, Baja California could live a historic year in tourism related activities, reaching their decade's best.
