If not between men and women, then it's not marriage: Mexico's Catholic Authorities

The catholic authority referred to Pope Francis' recent exhortation "Amoris Laetitia".

Mexico's Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera recently stated that, even if no one is excluded from the Catholic Church, any union that is not made up from a man and a woman is not remotely close to being a marriage.

Nevertheless, while celebrating mass at a church dedicated to St. John Paul II and St. Thomas More, Cardinal Rivera also emphasized that the civil rights and human dignity of people must be upheld, and that discrimination is to be avoided no matter the situation.

It was during this event that a bronze statue of St. John Paul II, Rivera, who is also the country's Metropolitan Archbishop, referred to the recent official proposal emitted by Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto for equal marriage by citing Pope Francis apostolic exhortation "Amoris Laetitia", saying that marriage has a sacramental essence and should be between men and women only.
