Tijuana: Biggest Tobacco Smoker in Baja California

Data confirms that habitual smoking does impact negatively on families and their economy.

Mexico hast the 10th highest tobacco consumption rate worldwide, says Dr. Iliana Castañeda Hernández, the Health Promotion coordinator for the Health Services Jurisdiction, and adds that Tijuana is the city with the highest index of smokers in all of Baja California.

In anticipation of the World No Tobacco Day, due in May 31, Castañeda mentioned that tobacco-related afflictions are among the top causes for death worldwide, and those numbers could double up to 10 million in the next five years, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The efforts to reduce the number of smokers are now focusing on teenagers, who are not included in the different statistics because they are minors, but can be prevented from becoming chronic smokers or people who consume an average of 6.5 cigarettes per day.

Castañeda also referenced WHO data showing that the people who spend the most on tobacco are the low-income population. This not only affects their health, but has a negative impact in their budget.
