Memorial Weekend a Tourist Jackpot for Baja California

Memorial Weekend numbers trump government's expectations.

TIJUANA. Over 200,000 people visited Baja California during Memorial Weekend, with hotels reporting an average occupancy of 77%, a 26% increase since last year, as confirmed by Baja California’s state government via the Ministry of Tourism.

Border cities (Tijuana, Tecate and Mexicali) averaged an 82% occupancy, a 52% increase over last year, while beach destinations reported a 78% occupancy in their hotels, 10% over 2015.

The economic benefit from this tourist influx was of at least 240 million pesos ($1, 3031,584.80 USD), of which 27 million ($1, 466,053.29 USD) went directly to the hotel industry of the region; this means a 25% increase in revenue since last year during the same period.

All three levels of government were constantly coordinating to ensure visitors a safe stay while in Baja. A little over 250 calls were made to the tourist attention number 078, of which 95% were information requests, and roadside assistance for the rest.

Over a 1,000 people received attention through the Ministry of Tourism’s information modules, which held everything they needed to know about tourist attractions and activities they could enjoy over the weekend.

Two cruises docked in Ensenada, carrying over 3,258 passengers, of which 2,606 disembarked and visited the city’s streets.

The Ministry of Tourism’s undersecretary said that just last year Baja California reached their best numbers in over 8 years, and that 2016 could very well surpass them if this trend continues.
