Tourism in Tijuana Expected to Spike During Artisan Expo

The expo opens next Wednesday, June 15, and will last the whole weekend.

TIJUANA, B.C. – Hoping that the 12th Artisan Expo brings over 16,000 people, which was last year’s attendance, the marketing director for the State Ministry of Tourism (SECTURE), Shaddia Wehbe Dipp, pointed that a hotel occupancy of 900 rooms per night is expected according to those numbers.

It is estimated that at least 15% of last year’s edition were foreign tourists. This year, Expo Organization Committee director, Javier Lechuga Leal, said that they have been getting calls from Colombia, San Francisco, California, Arizona, Los Angeles and other international cities that show interest in attending or ask what kind of products will be offered.

Wehbe added that the Expo would bring a 10 million pesos ($530,349.30 USD) economic benefit to the region when taking hotel, restaurant, convenience store, land and air transportation, and freighting earnings into account.

Between June 15 and 19, 170 stands will dominate the Tijuana Cultural Center esplanade, showcasing the artisan work of many artists hailing from the Mexican states of Jalisco, Nayarit, Michoacán, Chihuahua, Sonora, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Puebla and Yucatan.

The expo’s Artistic Program Coordinator, Jorge Centeno, announced that this year’s artistic program will be very familiar to a lot of people, and will include 12 folkloric ballets, 30 soloists, Arabic dances and salsa, bachata and capoeira shows.
