Tijuana mayor Jorge Astiazarán Orcí, has instructed police officers to maintain a permanent patrol in the area to prevent certain individuals from extorting people trying to cross the border, with the purpose of safeguarding pedestrians and drivers headed for the U.S. through the Otay and San Ysidro port of entry.

Due to a recent surge in these kinds of incidents around that area, Tijuana’s local government investigated reports about a group of people who blocked certain lanes at the port of entry and demanded money from drivers to let them pass.

In order to avoid this situation, Tijuana’s Ministry of Public Safety (SSPM) assigned several agents from the police department, K-9 units and officers that will supervise the lines created behind this port of entry, but they still need citizens to report any kind of suspicious or abusive activity that could impair free transit in the area.
