Marcela Celorio is Mexicos new Consul General in San Diego, the new representative for her country's and countrymen's interest in the region.
During a press conference at the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) binational crossing, Celorio highlighted the importance of teamwork and her openness to listen and learn from the border community.
That way, during her first official meeting, which was held alongside other diplomats and different representatives from various Mexican institutions, the new Consul General urged everyone to work as a unit and to strengthen Mexicos presence inside of the Cali-Baja megaregion.
Furthermore, she expressed her commitment towards promoting a bilateral commercial relation, fostering a secure environment, and boosting the economy of the region; this was done under the premise that both development and safety are necessary to better the living conditions of the population.
In order to make it easier for the Mexican community in San Diego to fully integrate into American society, Celorio and her team will identify potential allies and opportunities to empower migrants in a political, economic and social way, such as making sure that all Mexicans learn English.
As a consul based on the border, her job will focus on fostering a sense of community on both sides, and to promote a strong sense of cultural exchange and communication between students, the private sector and non-governmental organizations, among others. Also, she seeks to foster international cooperation and coordination between local and federal authorities as a way to identify and solve common issues.
Marcela Celorios term as Consul General will be governed by a sense of absolute respect towards legality and the upholding of immigrants Human Rights, the empowering of Mexicans abroad, a promotion of Mexicos image and culture, and the favoring of international cooperation, particularly in the Cali-Baja region.
Marcela Celorio, a Mexico City native, is a career diplomat with the rank of Minister; shes a lawyer who studied at the Escuela Libre de Derecho, one of Mexicos oldest and most prestigious law schools. She holds a Masters in Diplomatic Studies and National Defense and Security.
Celorio has also collaborated with the public sector most of her career. Her previous responsibilities include being the Director of Nationality and Naturalization at the Ministry of Foreign Relations; she has also been the Director of Mexican Protection Laws in the exterior, as well as Director for North American Affairs at the Ministry of the Interior. Outside of Mexico, she has represented the country as Chief of Staff at the Embassy of Mexico in the United States, and Deputy Consul General of Mexico in New York City, where she served from 2013 until this year.
