Beer of the Week: The Sospeso IPA, from Insurgente brewery

One of four original beers from the Tap Room line

This week’s BOTW is perfect for the city’s changing weather, and one of the beers from the Tap Room line offered by Insurgente, a local Tijuana brewery: The Sospeso IPA, product of a collaboration with a specialized coffee shop of the same name, Sospeso Café, known for its quality and infamous with some because of their no-milk, no-sugar policy in their own brews.

If you’re hoping for a strong aftertaste, just remember that this is an amber IPA with a light orange tint to it. From the very first sip you will feel the fruity, citrus aftertaste with coffee overtones. Nothing at all like a heavy stout, but the lingering mouthfeel and high alcohol content will surely remind you of one.

This IPA might even pose a challenge for seasoned beer connoisseurs because of its coffee infused flavor, especially because of Sospeso Café’s extremely high standards about the kind of beans they use. The coffee blend they used on the Sospeso IPA might even be a well-guarded secret, but what I know for sure is that both taste and aroma are worthy of the Insurgente name, and make for one of the best in their Tap Room line. Next stop: Born to be Mild.

The fact that the orange, black and white label is just asking to be a part of your collection comes as no surprise, seeing that Insurgente hired Eraboy, one of Mexico’s best design agencies, with the beer’s image. If you just can’t resist the impulse to get one, bottle and all, you can find it in Calimax stores around the city, but if you’re only craving a taste, a visit to the Insurgentes venue in La Plaza, or La Tasquita, which is located in Blvd. Aguacaliente.
