16 Brewers Graduate From the First Craft Beer Certification Program

The program lasted 4 months and took place in the Technological Institute of Tijuana

If you thought that getting a certification for making your own delicious beer was out of your reach, then maybe you should think again, because the Technological Institute of Tijuana (ITT) helped 16 persons to achieve that goal.

The ITT Director, Jose Guerrero Guerrero, and other school authorities gave 16 certifications to professional craft beer makers during a simple but meaningful ceremony at the audiovisual room.

Jose Guerrero stressed his satisfaction regarding the established relationship of this group of people, which had the support of qualified teachers and labs to successfully learn the process of craft beer brewing.

The future purpose of these courses is to make them available for the general public or anyone who wants to learn techniques and more. ITT teachers and brewers would be able to participate.

Francisco Ussel Enriquez, President of the Baja Brewers Association (ACB), explained that this idea emerged barely eight months ago, when they started to look for new ways of joining academic institutions with the brewing industry.

"ITT opened the door for us, they already had a brewing lab, so we contacted teachers and launched a call for associated brewers and began this program on March 1st, to end 3 and a half months later."

The idea is to offer beginner, intermediate, and advanced courses for craft beer brewing.

The subject of the Alcohol Law approval was discussed, because if the State Legislature accepts it, then the opportunities of getting three licenses that didn't existed before is more reachable and it would make the industry grow legally.

There are three licenses, one called Boutique to establish a store where they can sell the product, another for a Tasting Room, and the third one for the plant. They won't be able to sell other kind of beverages and the schedule will be limited.

The ex President of ACB, Jose Estrada Garcia stated that, as a movement, they're demanding

a modification in the special tax on Production and Services (IEPS) so there would be a lower tax charge for the brewers.

As well, they're trying to participate in the creation of an Official Mexican Standard for craft beer.

"The goal is to find the way to nationally grow as brewers, they already occupy an important place in Mexico, but they should lead the way because Tijuana and Baja California are leaders."
