San Diego and Tijuana Take a Lead in Supporting Entrepreneurs from Both Sides of the Border

San Diego Startup Week was a complete success

This summer, San Diego and Tijuana have come together to create a dynamic and welcoming environment for entrepreneurs from both sides of the border. San Diego Startup Week launched its inaugural binational track for entrepreneurs looking to learn more about the opportunities that exist in their neighboring city.

San Diego Startup Week brought together over 3,000 entrepreneurs from San Diego and across the border to create one of the most exciting weeks in San Diego. Tijuana organized and helped to promote the binational track and brought entrepreneurs from over five cities in Mexico looking to connect and support the ecosystem.

The proximity between San Diego and Tijuana allowed for the flow of innovation, people and talent coming from both sides of the border to build successful companies. "It was our first year leading and having the binational track during San Diego Startup Week; it was great to hear the feedback and excitement from the audience and that the talks and activities resonated with them " David Peguero, Mind Hub Business Incubator.

"It makes me extremely proud to be part of a city that values diversity and sees strength in coming together. Our unique geographic proximity is one of our greatest strengths and makes us different to any other city in the world" Regina Bernal, University of San Diego.

Entrepreneurs are known to "think outside the box" so why not think "outside the borders"? Entrepreneurs understand the power of building a strong network and infrastructure of support regardless of geographic location.

Building on the success and curiosity that emerged as part of San Diego Startup Week, Tijuana showcased the thriving startup ecosystem in the "Tijuana Startup Crawl." The first of its kind, the crawl brought entrepreneurs from the United States looking to learn more about the startup movement in Tijuana and how creativity is changing the mindset of business down the border.

Event leader, Paco Gudiño says that the Tijuana Startup Crawl's main objective was to show the entrepreneurial, business and student community from South California the opportunities that Tijuana has to offer in tech development, work spaces, culture, education and gastronomy.

The tour was divided into three different tracks: Business, Aguacaliente and Old Town, each one visiting some of Tijuana's most iconic locations, from tech to cultural spots, like MIND Hub, IOS Offices and Pasaje Revolución, giving the attendees the chance to know the main activities and history. At the end of the day, the three tracks converged at the world famous Avenida Revolución to taste the local culinary delights and enjoy a cold craft beer.

The Tijuana Startup Crawl demonstrated why Tijuana is being called the "Mexican Tech Hub" and how both entrepreneurial communities can work together to offer top services to the world.

"The tour highlighted the creativity and innovative spirit of Tijuana and is just the start of a much larger movement, where we combine the talents and capabilities of both San Diego and Baja, creating a sum larger than its two parts, and building a world-known region of innovation" Karolina Rzadkowolska, strategic initiatives manager at the University of San Diego.

Hopefully this will be start of many more tech crawls and collaboration between these two regions.
