No matter how many people you see at La Plaza Fiesta in Tijuana every weekend, how many independent brewery openings you've seen, or the huge success of Craft Beer Expos/ Festivals all over the country Mexico hasn't even reached the 1% in the national craft beer market.

Grupo Modelo and Heineken are the brands that cover most part of the market and, according to the President of Baja Brewers Association, Francisco Ussel, "even if all Mexico got together, the craft beer movement will not be enough, we barely have 0.6% of the market and we want to end this year with 0.8%, so the 1% could be a soon reality."
Ussel affirmed that this movement is still trying to take off, specifically in Baja California, if we take other states into account, such as California, we will see that this state managed to positionate its local product all over the United States, where craft beer covered more than 12% last year.

California has more than 700 breweries, while Mexico only has around 124; however, Francisco assures that the market changes a lot, and even though there are no numbers or percentages for Baja's craft beer consumption, "the product keeps "moving" and creating a local scene." The message is more than clear: Keep drinking local beer.
