The endemic species of small porpoise in the Gulf of California, la "vaquita marina", is going through its worst moment, as only 60 of them remain in the area.
The above statement was made by the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Rafael Pacchiano to the newspaper El Universal, where he highlighted that protection measures will be taken.
Despite the attempts the federal government has made to combat extinction, fishing nets have been the main threat to "vaquita marina."
Pacchiano said that among the activities taking place to safeguard species is the suspension of fishing in a period of two years.
Similarly, he highlighted the joint work carried out with the Navy in San Felipe and Santa Clara in the Upper Gulf of California to stop the capture of "totoaba", a species threatened for its high commercial value in Asia.
"Experts seek vaquita's mating as an alternative to save the species from extinction and recover the population," ended Pacchiano.
