Ballast Point Celebrates Their 20th Anniversary with Beerfest at Del Mar

Here are also 8 fun facts about the famous San Diego brewery

The largest brewery in San Diego turns 20-years-old this weekend, and even though they were recently acquired by the largest producer and distributor of alcoholic beverages in the United States, Constellation Brands, it has been one of the favorites for craft beer lovers in San Diego and Tijuana. Here are eight fun facts about this San Diegan brewery:

1.- The founder has the same name as The White Stripes guitarist

Jack White discovered his love for beer in college (as many of us), but the man is definitely not that pale artist we all know. This Jack studied at UCLA and along with his roommate Pete A'Hearn made their first beer in his apartment on campus.

2. Started as a brewing supply store

Actually, it all started in 1992 when these college boys opened a brewing supply store, because since they had their first beer, they realized that there were not many places to get certain necessary things for making them, nor did they have access to goods to make beer at home. Years later, in the back of the store, they began to sell their beer.

3.-Ballast Point is an actual place in Point Loma

It's a historical place in San Diego, the last lighthouse on the Pacific Coast that kept its beacon on until it was torn down in the 60s, which is now the Naval Base Point Loma.

4.- Almost all beers have names of fish or fishing terms

Labels prove it: Wahoo, Sculpin, The Commodore, Longfin, Grunion and so on…

5. They also produce rum, gin, whiskey and vodka

Ballast Point became one of the first distilleries in San Diego since 2012. The next two years they won the title of the Californian Distillery of the Year.

6.-Sculpin is a golden beer

This famous IPA Ballast Point won gold in 2010 and 2014 in one of the most important beer competitions at international level: The World Beer Cup. Sculpin has always been one of the beers that most distinguishes them.

7. They’ve changed their logo eight times in 20 years

The beginnings of Ballast Point happened while you were still watching Nickelodeon (the ones that make you nostalgic now) and that means that maybe you will not remember this evolution:
