The Best French Toast in Tijuana Is at Mantequilla

Enjoy brunch as the Gods of Food command

I'm sorry grandma. Your cooking is delicious but you're no longer the best french toast maker of Tijuana. The title goes to the young chef Pedro Velarde Padilla of

Mantequilla, the latest in a string of new brunch eateries south of the border.

Let's be honest, we're getting to the point in which Tijuana is overcrowded with new food spaces, so standing out in this ocean of "new" proposals becomes harder every time; but a place like Mantequilla is more than welcome. At first, the space was part of a japanese restaurant called Saketori-Ya (owned by Velarde too), but soon it started to build its own identity and at barely two months of the official opening, Mantequilla gained famed, and now, it's already one of the favorite places in the Hipodromo area of Tijuana to enjoy an exquisite brunch.

Pedro Velarde was born in Guadalajara but studied the culinary arts in San Diego, so he decided to open his own japanese restaurant south of the border. Nevertheless, thanks to his work in the famous The Cottage of La Jolla, he started getting more curious with this type of food, so Mantequilla was born, a place that welcomes you with a coffee stand on the corner, only to reveal an intriguing Japanese restaurant with Mexican and South California influences behind it. The result of the visit is a unique experience for your palate, and for your company.

With a great variety in the menu and reasonable prices, Mantequilla is the perfect place to hang out with your partner, your friends, and with your family. Inside the menu you can find an amazing french toast, chilaquiles, eggs Benedict, and a lot of veggie options, such as soy eggs or homemade granola. There are more extravagant delicacies at this place, and if you accompany them with a mimosa, then everything's perfect. Honestly, this is one of the most delicious culinary experiences in the city at the moment. What's even greater is that it doesn't feel like a pretentious meal at all, just really good food and that's it.

Mantequilla is located between Avenida Hipodromo and Avenida Tapachula, right behind Casino Caliente. This coffee stand is open from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m every day, and brunch is available from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (Sundays until 2:00 p.m.). For more information visit their Facebook page.
