The Mexico—U.S. Border Is Safer Than Ever

Gil Kerlikowske, Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection stressed that the border is secure just as it is right now

The commissioner of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Gil Kerlikowske, reiterated that the border between Mexico and the United States is as safe as it ever has been, and proof of this are the low levels of crime in border communities.

"The border has never been safer. We have more resources at the border and as a police chief for many years, I know when I see the number of crimes in border communities, and now, the crime rate is very low," said the Minister of customs during a bilateral meeting in San Diego, California.

"There are many cities in America that would love to be as safe as San Diego, El Paso and Tucson," he said to the EFE news agency.

The commissioner did not want to delve into the statements made by the Republican candidate for the White House in relation to building a wall along the border with Mexico, but said police forces keep working with or without such policies.

"They are state policies, and there has never been walls or borders for us officers, and if there are, then they’re invisible," said Castillejos.

"We in the Mexican and American state, and federal police forces are more interested in maintaining the confidence of officers along US and international and not worrying about walls," he added.
