Asylum Applications to the US Are Reduced to Just 50 Appointments a Day

Haitians sign up for a waiting list of more than two months

It is estimated that more than 4,000 immigrants remain stranded in Tijuana awaiting their appointment with U.S. authorities to review their application for political asylum or refugee status. Currently, appointments have been reduced from 115, to 50 a day, on a list that includes more than two months of waiting.

The authorities indicate that there is no migratory or humanitarian crisis, despite hostels, shelters and other rooms continuing to see no vacancies and little room for more immigrants, with dozens sleeping outside the National Institute of Migration (Inami).

According to Uniradio Informa, the governors of the northern border of Mexico will meet this week to solve the current and future problems of Haitians, also contemplating the massive deportation of compatriots from January 2017.

For now, Baja California expects confirmation of resources to continue providing comprehensive care to foreign immigrants who are stranded in Tijuana.
