MOSCOW. - Yelena Isinbayeva, once a great Olympic champion in pole vault, was chosen to head the new supervisory board of Russia's anti-doping agency, which seeks to clean up her image after a series of doping scandals.
The agency, known as Rusada, detailed Wednesday in a statement that Isinbayeva will lead a 10-person board that includes sports executives, academics and an official of the Ministry of Sports.
Isinbayeva was part of the Russian track and field team that was banned from the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on charges of mass doping, although she has not been charged with any infractions.
Her appointment to the board of Rusada could provoke tension and differences with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) since the sportswoman has been a critic target for a while.
His first assignment in Rusada will be to convince the WADA to accredit the agency, which will allow her to carry out anti-doping controls again. WADA said that to prove that to the Russian laboratory "it is necessary to transform the anti-doping system and culture" of all Russia.
