Best of Baja 2016: Best Concert Nominees

Great international artists played in the state

This year was key for the entertainment industry in Baja, where artists of international recognition visited the border city to offer people the show of their lives.

Many of the artists who performed in our region left an impactful chapter in the history of the concerts, because before this year, it was kind of unimaginable that one day they would appear in Baja, ever.

A good stretch that will surely open the doors for more artists of international stature in 2017, an alternative for many residents of the state who do not have the possibility to travel to the United States to witness high level shows.

After determining the nominees from a large list of shows in the region, we managed to mention the most important, whom we considered, the most influential concerts thanks to the great quality of the artist, the production, the number of attendees and the place where the shows were held; among which we find the following:

1.- KISS

The unimaginable happened. The legendary rock / metal band, KISS, performed in the city of Tijuana. High expectation and great excitement erupted from the announcement of the concert months ago and changed the way people thought about the Tijuana concert scene, at least how it has been in the last couple of years.

Attendants from both sides of the border did not miss the opportunity to go to one of the most outstanding concerts of 2016 in Tijuana.

Tijuana will have for its history that on Nov. 19, KISS surrendered to Tijuana with a great show, worthy of any other city in which they've performed, an excellent show that was only held in three cities of Mexico as part of the tour.

2.- Belinda in Valle Sunset

Although the singer of "Sapito", Belinda, had presentations in different cities of the state in 2016, one of the most representative events was her presentation in the vintage party organized by the wine house LA Cetto and Valle Sunset in Ensenada, having as a scenery the vineyards of Valle de Guadalupe.

3.- GusGus

For many, this performance went unnoticed, but it must be recognized that this electronic music group from Iceland called GusGus is considered one of the great representatives of this musical genre.

Their presence in Tijuana made clear that the city is already a space where different artists of various genres can converge.

The attendees were able to witness great mixes and fusions of music by GusGus, in an intimate presentation that left everyone very satisfied.

4.- Ricky Martin

To almost finish this 2016, a great artist performed in Tijuana. We refer to one of the world-renowned Latinos, Ricky Martin, who finished his "One World Tour" in the city of Tijuana.

A great atmosphere was experienced last Dec. 11 in front of almost twenty thousand spectators that crowded the Gasmart Stadium.

The atmosphere rose up from the moment Ricky Martin took the stage, a platform with great production, where he was greeted with euphoric shouts. The Boricua was in charge of giving a great presentation, extending his participation for almost two hours.

5.- Megadeth

La Monumental de Playas de Tijuana rumbled last September at the unexpected performance of the American band Megadeth.

The presence of this band in Tijuana was, perhaps, the detonator so that bands like KISS accepted to come to the city thanks to the great answer of the Tijuanenses who went to enjoy a great concert.

The band from Trash Metal caused a stir when they said that Tijuana treated them better than the city of San Diego.

6.-Jorge Drexler

November was marked by another great music representative. We refer to Jorge Drexler, the singer-songwriter who gained popularity by winning an Oscar for his song "Across the River" from the movie Motorcycle Diaries.

Cramming the Black Box stage, the songwriter was close to the hundreds of fans who did not miss the opportunity to attend his first presentation in the city of Tijuana.

Jorge Drexler totally gave himself to the public by singing the songs that the spectators asked him to play, added to that, he took the time between each songs to explain the history and the meaning of them.

7.- Fuerza Rock Festival

The scenery of the city of Tijuana also gave place to different music festivals, being Fuerza Rock Festival one most outstanding by gathering several players from the Mexican rock scene.

More than 13 bands took the Alamar stage to offer what was the first edition of the festival. Caloncho, Mon Laferte, Leon Larregui, Division Minuscula, and others were part of the performance.

A whole day of rock was lived in the month of June with this festival, which promises to return for 2017 with more rock performers.

8.- Guadalupe Valley

The events at Valle de Guadalupe had a distinctive feature this year called "Guadalupe Valley, Culinary & Music Festival"

[/p]

Two days of music, food and wine made it unique. This year they had Devendra Banhart as part of their musical repertoire, as well as new indie artists proposals, an event very much like international festivals as Coachella. Another Edition of this festival is expected for 2017, which promises to catch up with others of international level.

9.- The Adicts

Another great show brought by Black Box was The Adicts. This as part of the Halloween 2016 tour, in which the group visited again the city of Tijuana, where it offered a spectacular concert.

Exceeding expectations, the punk band showed on stage their great career of more than 40 years.

Serpentinas and naipes in the air paraded before the musical themes of the band, inspired by the film "A Clockwork Orange."

These were just some of the biggest shows that went through Baja California in 2016, and consolidated world-class artists whose presence in this state would be unthinkable before. Hopefully this is just the beginning and this will bring more bands next year with great shows without having to go to the United States to enjoy quality performances.
