According to the first census of the 2016-2017 season conducted by the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas, there are 347 gray whale specimens in the Baja California Peninsula, of which 124 are calves born in the lagoons of the Reserve of the Biosphere "El Vizcaino."

The Ojo de Liebre lagoon registered the largest number of specimens, 199 adult whales and 109 births. While the Lagoon of San Ignacio had 24 adults and 15 calves.

The reproduction and migration season of this mammal in the entity began the past Dec. 15 and will conclude next April 30. It will be in February when the largest number of adult whales from the North of the Continent or born in Mexican waters are present.

The Reserve of the Biosphere "El Vizcaíno" allows the care and preservation of the species, since its waters are ideal for reproduction.

This reserve is the largest protected natural area in Mexico, with more than two million 500 thousand hectares, where turtles, sea lions, sharks and seabirds live.
