The Latest Haitian Immigrant Enriching Tijuana's Culinary Diversity

She's been cooking her dishes for two months already in a small space of Downtown Tijuana

We at SanDiegoRed has always been one of the first to report on the newest culinary marvels amongst the streets of Tijuana. Food has always been part of what we desperately seek in our town and one day, one of our reporters stumbled upon a Haitian woman making a traditional and delicious dish for fellow refugees, and for some curious mexicans too, that now famous Haitian Chicken.

This dish might sound pretty easy and non special at all, but its flavor is definitely great and the rice that accompanies it is just perfect!

We now have found another great story of another woman that's planning on giving "tijuanenses" and tourist another part of Haiti through new dishes.

Discovering the culinary and cultural fusion of the Haitian-born migrants who came months ago to these shores, keeps surprising us all with the appearance of new locales that offer food with Haitian seasoning.

Thanks to this we met Lucy, a beautiful Haitian woman who came to Tijuana in December of last year along with thousands more to the city.

Like many of them, Lucy has a history of overcoming major hurdles in her life, which involves different events that have marked her and that made her embark on the search for new opportunities after leaving her native Haiti.

The search for new opportunities made Lucy study nursing, her profession, but the pleasure of learning more led her to study a culinary course for three years while she lived in the Dominican Republic.

When she arrived to Tijuana, she realized that her countrymen and women were looking for a place that would offer them a traditional meal in Mexico, so thanks to the support of a local entrepreneur she became friends with, she started selling Haitian food in a little shop in Downtown Tijuana.

In the small kitchen, Lucy, always with her contagious smile, welcomes her clients who are looking for a traditional home cooked meal, and also the curious Mexicans who want to discover other types of cuisine and the options they have in Tijuana.

This is how Lucy, through her efforts, has managed to maintain her small business for two months, which she hopes to expand soon due to the great demand she has had and her great acceptance.

Like other Haitian food businesses in the city, she offers the traditional "Haitian chicken," and others with spiced meats.

Always in a good mood, Lucy already sees in Tijuana her future home, hoping to excel financially and send money to her relatives in Haiti, whose situation is delicate after going through the two natural disasters that devastated the island in the last seven years.

If you want to have a new culinary experience and spend a pleasant moment talking with Lucy, we recommend you go visit her kitchen, located on the street Francisco Madero, between fourth and fifth street, sharing the space with another establishment that sells local products with which she shares space.

And although she confirmed that she likes Tijuana a lot, when we asked her if he would like to get married to a Mexican, she answered graciously that "no, Mexicans are very "loco" here," showing that trademarked humor of hers.

Here's Lucy showing us one of her dishes, a beef steak marinated with a traditional Haitian mix with very rich side dishes that makes a plate that does not exceed 70 pesos. Very well served. Photo: Ángel García/SanDiegoRed.com
