UABC Students Offer Free Spanish Lessons To Haitians

Five students from the Faculty of Languages are part of this community project

With the purpose of collaborating with society, a goal that the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC) promotes, five young people of the Languages Faculty are offering FREE classes to Haitian immigrants stranded in the city of Mexicali.

The Spanish language class given to the Haitian community that remained to reside in Mexicali is taught every Saturday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

The classes are taught in the shelter "El hijo pródigo 4" in Downtown Mexicali, where Haitians are taught basic themes for daily living in the city, as well as parts of the body, also to have certain courtesies or manners regarding the application for employment, among others.

Because it is a project promoted by the teachers themselves, the materials they use are scarce, so they ask for help from citizens to collect materials such as notebooks, pencils, pens and even chairs for students.

So far, three classes have been given to people between 20 and 30 years of age with an excellent response even though the conditions of classes are not the best.

This is expected to be just the beginning of a great project, where next semester students from other careers will join to offer more alternatives and not just Spanish classes.
