As part of ongoing efforts to deepen collaboration between the municipal government and the private sector, Tijuana Mayor Abdiel Gutiérrez Coronado paid a visit to the facilities of Össur Mexico, a global leader in medical device innovation.
During the tour, the mayor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fostering investment and job creation, highlighting the company’s significant role in the region’s economic landscape.
“It is a privilege to visit a world-class operation like Össur Medical, which over 16 years has become a cornerstone of Tijuana’s industrial vitality and a key driver of our growing medical products cluster,” he stated.

Mayor Highlights Tijuana’s Competitive Edge
Mayor Gutiérrez Coronado emphasized that the expansion of pioneering medical-technology firms such as Össur is a clear indicator of Tijuana’s competitiveness and the private sector’s confidence in the city’s future.
“Össur’s operational expansion announcement in Tijuana is welcome news, as it translates into high-value jobs, access to cutting-edge technology, and renewed momentum for local economic development,” he said. “This is a strong vote of confidence in the talent, stability, and investment potential our city offers.”
Pedro Alejandro Montejo Peterson, Tijuana’s Secretary of Economic Development, added that Össur plans to channel new investment into the city by relocating production of certain items currently manufactured in Iceland.
“This is a major investment that will create additional employment and reaffirms the trust that global firms place in our workforce and specialized talent,” Montejo Peterson noted.

Montejo Peterson also stressed that close coordination between business leaders and the municipal government has been instrumental in addressing the operational needs of companies expanding their footprint in Tijuana.
During the visit, Össur executives provided an overview of the company’s local operations, showcasing its advanced manufacturing processes and its impact on the medical-technology sector. Attendees also witnessed a live demonstration of highly specialized bionic prosthetic devices.

Össur Medical, A Global Leader in Orthopedic Innovation
Lukas Märklin, Global Chief Operating Officer of Össur Medical, described the company as a worldwide reference in orthopedic and prosthetic solutions, dedicated to enhancing patients’ quality of life.
“Our Tijuana plant ranks among our most important facilities globally, serving as a hub for advanced manufacturing and biorobotics,” Märklin said.
Currently, Össur exports over 25,000 devices annually to markets in the United States, Europe, and Asia, further cementing Tijuana’s status as Mexico’s premier manufacturing hub for medical devices.
The tour was also attended by María Fernanda Mena Rodríguez, Director of Economic Promotion for the 25th Tijuana City Hall; Eduardo Salcedo Morín, General Director of Össur Mexico; Eduardo Acosta, Vice President of RL Jons Customhouse; and other Össur Mexico collaborators.
