Tijuana Mayor Ismael Burgueño has unveiled two significant road infrastructure projects: the expansion of a key connector route and the modernization of the city’s traffic light system.
The centerpiece of the announcement is the widening of the section connecting the third lane of Vía Rápida to Avenida Internacional.

According to the mayor, this project has already reached the executive planning phase, being developed jointly by the local Department of Sustainable Mobility (SEMOV) and the Metropolitan Planning Institute (IMPLAN), with construction slated to begin in 2026.

While no specific start date has been confirmed, the mayor emphasized that planning is well underway.
The expansion will add a dedicated lane allowing motorists direct access to Avenida Internacional, while the remaining two lanes will be reserved exclusively for the Ready Lane leading to the San Ysidro port of entry. By separating vehicle streams, decreased congestion for both Playas de Tijuana residents and those heading to the border crossing is expected.
Smart Traffic Lights on the Horizon
The city is also moving forward with traffic light improvements throughout the city. Burgueño reported that synchronization efforts are already underway at select intersections, with plans to expand significantly.
Following recent meetings with SEMOV officials, the mayor anticipates incorporating IMPLAN into ongoing discussions, recognizing that both agencies play crucial roles in developing integrated mobility solutions.

The mayor explained that these discussions will zero in on Tijuana’s major traffic chokepoints, identifying the busiest boulevards to determine where new technology can have the greatest impact.
According to Mayor Burgueño, the city is already actively developing this strategy and anticipates beginning to roll out tangible upgrades to the traffic light network within the year.
