As Holy Week approaches, the Tijuana Municipal Government led by Mayor Ismael Burgueño joined forces with the United States Consulate to introduce a new “Emergency Button” feature within a mobile application. The tool is designed to enhance safety for foreign visitors by providing bilingual assistance.

The update, now available on the app, was authorized to begin rolling out both manually and automatically, depending on individual device settings, according to José Alejandro Avilés, head of the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Protection.

Safety Designed for Every Profile

The revamped app offers a customized security experience based on user profiles. Authorities explained there are two account types: one for local residents, set up in Spanish, and another for foreign users, with English as the primary language.

While the application is fully functional, officials noted that future updates may introduce additional languages and expanded features.

The app is currently available in app stores across Mexico and the United States. In the U.S., users near the border will also receive an automatic notification prompting them to download it.

The system provides direct routing to 911, while specialized tourist assistance can be accessed through a combination of 911 and 078.

A Protective Shield

By setting up their account, users grant background location permissions and ensure connectivity before their trip, creating what officials describe as a protective shield from the first kilometer.

For foreign nationals, the visitor portal includes reactive tools built on three key pillars to support a safe stay:

  • Prevention and Mobility: English-language access to current traffic regulations, details on common infractions, and a system for locating towed vehicles.
  • Direct Assistance: GPS location of border crossings and police stations, plus direct links to emergency numbers including 911, 089, and 078.
  • Transparency: A direct channel for submitting complaints or recognition regarding police officers, reinforcing the city’s commitment to accountability.

The app is designed for ease of use in high-stress situations. Tourists can activate the emergency trigger with a single tap, classify the type of incident within seconds, and instantly transmit critical location data to responders.

U.S. Consulate Praises Cross-Border Coordination

Christopher Teal, U.S. Consul in Tijuana, expressed gratitude for the city’s ongoing collaboration with the consulate, emphasizing the importance of such efforts in safeguarding American citizens.

He also noted the emergency button will be especially valuable during the upcoming Holy Week holiday and as the region prepares for the 2026 World Cup, which Mexico, the United States, and Canada will jointly host.
