Plans are in place to put the Otay II border crossing to use, a move expected to ease congestion at Otay I, one of Tijuana’s busiest crossing points.
Kurt Ignacio Honold, Baja California’s Secretary of Economy and Innovation, said the Mexican side of Otay II could be operational soon, pending the signing of agreements between federal, state, and municipal authorities.
“We’re waiting for the customs director to announce it alongside the governor, and once the paperwork is signed, Otay II will immediately start connecting with Otay I,” Honold said. “The plan is ready; the next day we’ll be up and running.”
Officials said the goal is to divert some of the truck traffic currently backing up at Otay I to Otay II, relieving nearby roads and improving overall traffic flow.

The move is seen as a key step in reducing wait times at the border, which has faced heavy vehicle volumes in recent years. By leveraging the existing infrastructure at Otay II, authorities aim to make crossings smoother for both commercial and passenger vehicles.
