‘El Chapo’ was a simple person

The lawyer José Refugio, defended Joaquín Guzmán for three years

Mexican lawyer José Refugio Rodríguez, who defended Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán for three years, said that he was a simple person and far from the characterization of being a "monster".

In the interview published on Sunday by the online edition of the Chilean Newspaper La Tercera, Rodríguez said that "the 'Chapo' Guzmán was very austere, he did not wear brand clothes or jewelry," so the stories of his supposed luxuries as told by ex-collaborators are false.

In regards of the different versions that Guzman had a ranch with a zoo and private train, he said "I never saw that on a property here in Mexico and I did not hear him say that he had any of that. I go to Sinaloa very frequently and people speak well of Joaquín Guzmán. They say that he led a very simple life".

Rodríguez, who defended Guzmán from 2014 to 2017, when he was extradited to the United States to stand trial for drug trafficking, is currently a lawyer for the father-in-law and brother-in-law of "El Chapo," who were involved in the prison breaks of the Sinaloa Cartel chief in 2001 and 2015.
