Tijuana surprised Baja California this Tuesday after placing in the top 20 of the municipalities with most active COVID-19 cases in Mexico and going from 23rd to 13th place on this list.

According to Health Secretary Alonso Pérez Rico, this was due to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) releasing tests for coronavirus, resulting in 446 active cases in the city, a municipality that until yesterday registered 314.

Mexicali was another of the municipalities that presented an increase from 292 to 314, in addition to Ensenada from 111 to 117, Rosarito from 38 to 39 and San Felipe from 13 to 15. For its part, Tecate adds 36 active cases and San Quintín 14.

In addition, the head of the agency said that in the last 24 hours the region registered 445 new COVID-19 cases, 285 located in Tijuana, city that accumulates 11 thousand 787 confirmed cases. At the same time, overnight 18 Baja Californians lost their lives to this disease, 13 of them in Mexicali, three in Ensenada and two in Tijuana.

It is worth mentioning that these three municipalities are where most of the 5 thousand 586 deaths by COVID-19 that are registered today in the state are concentrated. 2 thousand 416 in Tijuana, 2 thousand 242 in Mexicali and 700 in Ensenada. According to Dr. Pérez Rico, of the 2 thousand 109 suspicious cases that still exist in the state, it is expected that between 60 and 70 percent will be positive.

For the time being, the hospitals that attend patients with coronavirus in Baja California report 166 available beds and 136 ventilators, as well as 571 hospitalized patients of which 171 are intubated. The current hospital occupancy rate is 81.32 percent.
