Mexico announces it will buy 12 million Chinese vaccines

Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, stated that Mexico will buy 12 million Sinopharm vaccines.

This Tuesday, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard informed Mexicans that the government will buy 12 million of the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine, which has not yet been approved. With this amount of doses, the number of vaccines sent from this country would increase, since the Sinovac vaccines have already begun to arrive in Mexico.

The Chancellor did not say what is the percentage of effectiveness of the vaccine acquired, however, the U.S. newspaper, San Diego Union-Tribune reported that the vaccine has an effectiveness of 79%. However, Sinopharm has not published data from advanced clinical trials.

Mexico has approved six vaccines: CanSino (65.7% effectiveness), Pfizer (95%), Sputnik V (91%), AstraZeneca (76%), Sinovac (51% )and, now, Sinopharn (79%). However, it was expected that most of the vaccines administered would be Pfizer, but due to the shortage of this brand this has not been possible.

As of today, Mexico has more than 2 million confirmed cases, while it is close to 200 thousand deaths due to this virus. On the other hand, Baja California is in 8th place nationally among the entities that have suffered the greatest loss of life due to the coronavirus.
