During his daily report, the head of the Secretariat of Health in Baja California, Alonso Perez Rico, confirmed that variants of SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19, have already been detected in this State.

Without giving many details, he commented that they are already monitoring the B1.1.7, originated in the United Kingdom, the P1 known as the Brazilian one, and also the B.1.427 y B.1.429 identified for the first time in California, United States; these last two "are already here with us", he said.

Perez Rico indicated that more information will be given today, but for the moment he asked to continue being careful and above all to reduce the reproduction of the virus in the entity, since the indicators show that the battle is being lost, by registering an Effective Reproduction Rate (ER) of 1.25.

This means that one person with COVID-19 in Baja California can infect two more. And at the municipal level, Mexicali and Tijuana are the most worrying for the authorities as they register an ER of 1.58 and 1.25, respectively and increasing.

"These types of trends, may we not start with a negative trend, can generate massive transmission chains, especially in these cities that are the most agglomerated," said the Secretary.

In addition, he assured that if the transmission speed is not reduced, "we will have to start reducing the capacity and activities, because we cannot allow these to be the source of the third wave[/b ]in our state", [b]he pointed out.

Currently, Baja California has 44 thousand 985 COVID-19 cases, and 7 thousand 746 unfortunate deaths. In the last 24 hours alone, 70 new cases and 16 deaths were reported, said Perez Rico.

On Wednesday, 68 people were hospitalized in the region, while 43 more were intubated due to this disease. According to the head of this agency, from yesterday to today, ten patients with automated mechanical ventilation have been hospitalized.

How many cases are still active? There are 277 in the state, of which 124 are located in Mexicali, 97 in Tijuana, 33 in Ensenada, 11 in Rosarito, seven in San Quintin and five in Tecate.
