Street disinfection in Tijuana proven to reduce COVID-19 infections

Tijuana has implemented a constant sterilization of public spaces for the past 53 consecutive weeks

With the objective of reducing COVID-19 cases, the Tijuana City Hall, in collaboration with the Municipal Public Services Department (DSPM), has been sanitizing and sterilizing more than 233 sites belonging to the city's 9 delegations, where a greater flow of people has been detected, for 53 weeks in a row.

These activities will continue to be carried out indefinitely in the municipality, since the state executive announced that from April 19 to 25, Baja California will remain in epidemiological yellow traffic light color, so in Tijuana the corresponding measures will be taken and the hygiene protocols will be reinforced both in the streets and in the establishments of the city.

It was on April 4, 2020, when the City Council announced the beginning of a sanitation program in public spaces to face the rapid spread of the Sars-CoV2 virus, which by December 14 of the same year, had already affected the health of 9 thousand 251 citizens and claimed the lives of 2 thousand and 3 more people.

To date, according to information provided by the Secretariat of Health of Baja California, there are 323 active cases throughout the state, of which 109 are in Tijuana, that is, nearly one third. Restaurants, hotels and bars can operate with a 50 percent capacity; night clubs, nightclubs and party halls continue to be suspended.

According to the Municipal Public Services Department, from April 4, 2020 to April 10, 2021 (53 weeks), 233 locations have been disinfected, including streets, parks, stations of the Integral Transportation System of Tijuana (SITT), surfaces that accumulate 4 million 661 thousand 676 square meters, equivalent to sanitize the International Airport and the Amistad Park.

On the other hand, in just a month and a half, an area of 556 thousand 922 square meters has been disinfected, corresponding to 128 zones, a space similar to Parque Morelos, one of the lungs of the city, in order to guarantee the care and protection of the health of the citizens.

Additionally, 10 thousand and 61 vehicle units have been disinfected in a space created for public transportation, which provide a service to the population, such as patrol cars and SITT units, cleaning using Germiquin, a chemical effective in eliminating the new coronavirus, cleaning surfaces and eliminating bacteria.

It is worth mentioning that the municipal authority has been vigilant and has participated in the compliance of protocols in areas open to the public. As a safety and protection measure, in delegations, the Municipal Palace and other City Hall facilities, temperature control filters have been installed and disinfectant gel has been applied.

This work is carried out in coordination with the Municipal Health Directorate (DMS), which continues to carry out awareness and health care promotion activities, as well as following the corresponding protocols.

As part of this work, through the DMS, it was announced that all vaccines against COVID-19, which have arrived in the country and the city, are endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO), with safety and effectiveness, after being subjected to rigorous tests and clinical trials by experts in the field.

Currently, 250 thousand and 71 senior citizens have already received the vaccine against the virus throughout the state. The vaccination process will be gradual and will benefit the entire population seeking to resume their lives in a normal way, so the municipality urges Tijuana residents to continue taking care of their health and not to lower their guard, in the face of a third wave of infections.
