Baja California one of the states with a COVID-19 variant "of concern"

The variants discovered in Brazil, India, South Africa, United Kingdom, New York and California have been confirmed in Mexican territory

Mexico notifies 142 patients who have some type of COVID-19 variant classified as "of concern" by the World Health Organization (WHO), located in 26 Mexican states, according to information provided by the Sequencing Laboratories Network (Red Laboratorios de Secuenciación).

The researcher in Medical Sciences and Coordinator of the SARS Cov-2 Sequencing Team corresponding to the National Institute of Genomic Medicine (INMEGEN), Alberto Cedro Tanda, announced that the GISAID platform divided the diagnosed cases as follows:

  • 4 Mutation B.1.351 (South Africa)
  • 108 Mutation B.1.1.7 (United Kingdom)
  • 30 P1 variant (Brazil)

Just last week authorities counted 93 cases of people in total with these mutations discovered so far, which shows that this figure increased by 55% in 7 days; Authorities revealed that no strain registered so far has a similar structure to the common coronavirus, which started this pandemic.

On the other hand, Tanda also reported on the cases detected in the nation on variants "of interest", amounting to 268, confirming:

  • 1 of Mutation B.1.617 (India)
  • 238 of the B.1.429 and B.1427 mutation linkage (California)
  • 5 from B.1 526 (New York).

It is worth mentioning that the Californian strain was originally classified as "of concern" and not "of interest" as stated by the Mexican authorities, the issue was clarified thanks to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the United States, although this "error" in its classification is due to the fact that Mexico takes the WHO reports and not those of the CDC, as official .

The South African mutation is also present in the country, specifically in the states of Baja California with one case, 2 in Campeche and one in Nuevo León, announced last April 19.

Reports indicate that the British variant is the fastest to be transmitted to another human being and its diagnoses are located in Chihuahua, Zacatecas, Tampico, Nuevo León, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Quintana Roo, Yucatán, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Puebla, Querétaro and Veracruz.

The Brazilian predominates in the states of Mexico City, Quintana Roo, Jalisco, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Puebla and Guanajuato, among others, but in smaller quantities, while the Californian was reported in Baja California, Guanajuato, Baja California Sur, Zacatecas, Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Mexico City, Nuevo León, Querétaro, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Michoacán, Sonora, Morelos, Puebla, Coahuila, Jalisco, Aguascalientes, Veracruz, Chiapas, Colima, Hidalgo, San Luis Potosí, State of Mexico and Tamaulipas.
