The administration of Tijuana Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz has rescued 21 birds that were being illegally sold in the city through two separate operations. These actions, carried out by the Directorate of Inspection and Verification, reflect the local government’s commitment to protecting animal welfare.
José Antonio Olivas Heredia, Director of Inspection and Verification, reported that the first rescue resulted from a citizen’s complaint about illegal bird sales near the Sánchez Taboada district.

“The mayor’s instructions are clear: we must protect all living beings. This administration is committed to taking action to eradicate the illegal sale of any species and ensuring compliance with municipal regulations,” the official stated.
Olivas Heredia explained that upon receiving the report, inspectors located a street vendor offering 20 birds for sale in a public space, a violation of municipal and animal protection laws.

The official added that authorities filed an administrative report with the corresponding fine before rescuing the animals, which were found overcrowded in small cages.
In a separate incident, Olivas reported that during routine inspections at a flea market near the Hidalgo neighborhood, officers discovered the illegal sale of an exotic bird kept inside a cage.

The head of the agency noted that in this case, inspectors identified the person in possession of the bird, issued an administrative sanction with a fine, and proceeded with the animal’s rescue.
The government of Tijuana reaffirms its commitment to animal care and respect for life, promoting responsible actions and reminding citizens that animals are not commodities.
