Rubén Echeverría, cop who danced while directing traffic in Tijuana, passes away

Today on November 4, 2022, some sad news was reported: Rubén Echeverría, better known as “El Apa”, the cop who danced while directing traffic in the city of Tijuana, passed away. Many Tijuana natives remember him with joy as his performances were always a delight to watch.

In fact, Rubén Echeverría became a sort of local celebrity after a video of a policeman dancing while directing traffic went viral in 2014; this video was shared on social media and his dancing became international news. In fact, his photo and video were shared in Russian and English media outlets.

In some interviews, Echeverría said that he always enjoyed dancing and to him it was important to help drivers and pedestrians to keep calm while waiting for their turn on the road.

The video that brought him international fame occurred at “Glorieta de las Tijeras”, an iconic emblem that represents the union of the city’s cultures, while directing traffic next to Tijuana’s Cultural Center (CECUT). He was wearing white gloves to pay tribute to the king of pop, Michael Jackson.

So far, no reasons for his death have been disclosed, however, the love he had for his work was undeniable. Rest in peace.
