Governor Marina del Pilar Promotes Community Well-Being and Crime Prevention with "Jornadas de Paz" in Tijuana

Authorities visit communities to address needs and prevent crime as part of this security strategy.

On Monday, December 9, a "Jornada de Paz" (Peace Campaign) took place at the Community Center in Colonia El Pípila, Tijuana. This initiative aims to prevent organized crime while fostering well-being and peace in Baja California's communities.

Nearly 400 people, including local residents, attended the event, which is part of a national strategy to promote social peace in vulnerable communities through active collaboration among local, state, and federal authorities.

The Deputy Secretary of Addiction and Crime Prevention, Esthela Peralta, highlighted the importance of these initiatives and emphasized the value of directly engaging with families and young people in their homes as a comprehensive approach to crime prevention.

"This type of direct action allows us to identify social issues in the most efficient and face-to-face manner and offer solutions to citizens," Peralta said.

Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to safeguarding citizens' safety and well-being. Joined by Tijuana Mayor Ismael Burgueño and other key officials, the governor emphasized the vital role of coordinated efforts among all three levels of government in effectively addressing security challenges in Tijuana and other cities.

Peace is built daily through well-being and love, not through war or bloodshed, as crime was addressed in the past. We are here to build peace. Here, we are sowing the seeds of peace.

Tijuana is the only city in Baja California included in this federal program, underscoring its priority status for addressing specific regional challenges.

Jornadas de Paz: A National Crime-Fighting Strategy

The "Jornada de Paz" initiative is part of a strategy spearheaded by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Its roots trace back to a similar program implemented during her tenure as Head of Government in Mexico City. Thanks to its success, the initiative has expanded to other regions, including Tijuana.

This program primarily aims to reduce crime rates and provide young people with safe environments full of opportunities. Authorities visit every home to assess community needs and deliver solutions within 10 working days.

"Peace begins here in Baja California, in Tijuana. We are all part of this journey. Help us in your homes. If you notice your child associating with the wrong people or struggling with addictions, reach out to us. These campaigns are the best platform to listen to you and address the root causes of violence and crime," Governor Marina del Pilar said.

During her address, the governor expressed pride in the progress achieved under Mayor Ismael Burgueño's administration regarding security in Tijuana. However, she also emphasized that combating organized crime remains a significant challenge.

The governor reiterated that the strategy focuses on prevention and creating opportunities for young people through access to education, jobs, and sports programs, aiming to address the root causes of criminal behavior.

"We have made great strides in reducing crime rates in Tijuana, but we will continue working together to ensure safety for all families," she added.

Who Are the "Sembradores de Paz"?

The "Sembradores de Paz" (Peace Sowers) are a network of officials and community members working alongside federal, state, and local governments. Their mission is to visit the most vulnerable communities, identify residents' needs, and provide timely responses.

Governor Marina del Pilar emphasized that this hands-on, personalized approach is essential for building a more peaceful and secure society.

Mayor Ismael Burgueño: Grateful for Coordinated Efforts

Tijuana Mayor Ismael Burgueño expressed gratitude to the federal and state governments for their support. He acknowledged that meaningful transformation is only possible through collaboration.

The 25th City Hall is implementing a comprehensive strategy that combines prevention, intelligence-based solutions, and technology to improve the municipal police force.

"Our main goal is to restore peace to Tijuana's families. We are working hand-in-hand with state and federal authorities to make this happen," Mayor Burgueño stated.

Community Services Provided at Colonia El Pípila

The Jornada de Paz at Colonia El Pípila in Tijuana was organized in collaboration with state and local authorities. Assistance centers were set up to provide residents with services such as social welfare programs, medical consultations, vaccinations, and personalized support—all free of charge.

Local authorities also conducted home visits to hear residents' concerns directly. Governor Marina del Pilar and Mayor Ismael Burgueño personally visited several homes, engaging with the community and offering solutions to their challenges.

Through these actions, the Baja California government reinforces its commitment to building a safer, more peaceful society by preventing crime and creating opportunities for young people to escape the influence of drugs and organized crime.
