Xolos lose on injury time own goal

Richard Ruiz’ gaff difference in 2-1 loss to Celaya FC in Copa MX

The game appeared to heading to the end with both teams playing for a tie. But an own goal by Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles defender Richard Ruiz helped host Celaya FC to a 2-1 win.

Ruiz tried to block a Celaya shot during second half injury time of a Copa MX match up in Celaya, Guanajuato. Ruiz instead redirected the ball into his own net, spoiling the Xolos’ shot at earning another point in the Group 6 standings of the domestic tournament featuring clubs from the First and Second division.

Instead, the Xolos will have to wait for a rematch against Celaya next Tuesday when the second leg of the home-and-home series takes place at Estadio Caliente.

The Xolos took the lead in the 18th minute with a goal by Raul Nava, who made his first appearance with Tijuana this season. Nava took a Fidel Martinez pass and blasted it past Celaya goalkeeper Edmundo Rios.

Celaya tied the match in the 30th minute when a Julio Pardini sent a left-footed shot from outside the penalty area and had it deflect off Xolos defender Joshua Abrego and sail past Xolos goalkeeper Adrian Zermeno into the back of the net.

That was an unfortunate play for Tijuana but perhaps not as devastating as the own goal by Ruiz to lose the game.

Tijuana returns to the regular season Apertura 2012 tournament schedule Friday when it hosts Tigres UANL in a Week 5 match up at Estadio Caliente.
