Resources for culture will be reduced in Mexico

The Federal Government proposes a budget cut of almost $4k million pesos

The National Institute for Fine Arts, the Movie Industry in Mexico, the cities which are "Human Heritage" and the Tijuana Cultural Center, are only some of the institutions, sites and sectors that will be affected in case the legislators approve the budget reduction for the culture in Mexico, which was proposed by the Federal Government.

This reduction will be a little more than 23%, which is around $4k Million pesos, this would regretfully have a huge impact on Mexican society by reducing culture and its promotion. This budget would be the lowest it has been in the past 3 years in case senators and congressmen authorize it, if approved it would take effect during 2014.

In an interview with the newspaper "La Jornada", the congresswoman Raquel Jimenez Cerillo (PAN) Secretary of the Cultural Commission in San Lazaro, denounced the effects of this proposal and highlighted the governments lack of interest in culture.

"It would be a step back to the 70's and 90's, when the premise of the Political party PRI's focus was: 'The less educated the public, the easier it is to control and manipulate'. This posture is no longer valid in this day and age".

In comparison to Felipe Calderon's time as President, during the last year of his time in office, the Congress approved a budget of $16,663.20 Million Pesos for culture; last December the budget that was authorized was 16,533.63 Million, and now Enrique Peña Nieto sent a budget proposal for 12,592.39 Million pesos.

Jimenez Carrillo also mentioned that it was a contradiction that the government pretended to fight violence with more culture, given that when you take a look at the budget proposal you can clearly observe a lack of support. She added that the Congress should fight and reject this proposal, like they would have years before.

The budget cut proposed by Enrique Peña Nieto, also contemplates the removal of the "Donations and support" which is administered by the National Counsel for Culture and Arts (Conaculta). This division counts with 3,907.86 Million Pesos, and is a great supporter of Mexican artists of different disciplines, given that they finance several projects like Dance, Theater, Music, Movies, and Television among others.
