Mexican authorities from the state of Tabasco today seized five boxes of cardboard with several millions of dollars in stacks of large bills, allegedly belonging to Jose Manuel Saiz, ex-treasurer from the government administration of Andres Granier (2007-2012).
The state attorney from Tabasco, Fernando Valenzuela, said the seizure of cash, which according to local media amounts to about eight million dollars, was achieved in an operation conducted in the morning on Wednesday in the town of Lomitas, located in the municipality of Nacajuca.
The prosecutor explained that as a result of an investigation into the diversion of federal and state funds in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, "it was learned that they had been making the transfer of large sums of cash contained in cardboard boxes and of questionable origin."
He explained that in the five boxes were found 168 bundles, most bills which were in the amount of 500 and 1,000 pesos, although he did not give an exact amount of money that was seized, investigators will be responsible for counting the money.
Valenzuela said the ex-treasurer will not be arrested, because apparently he obtained an injunction from a judge in the state of Merida, Yucatan, while others who had some involvement in the management of public resources will be prosecuted with the support of the Attorney General of Mexico and other state prosecutors.
