Mexicans Can Now Travel To Canada With Their U.S. Visas

And Canadian visas will no longer be required beginning 2016

CANADA.- On Tuesday, Canada's Government announced the expansion of their Electronic Travel Authorization program (ETA) were they included Mexican travelers.

This means that, starting in the first trimester of 2016, Mexican travelers who had a Canadian visa during the last 10 years or are able to travel to the US with their tourist visas (or are also American citizens), will now be exempt from processing a new visa to enter Canada.

If they meet all the requirements, they will just have to request authorization beforehand through electronic resources established by the Canadian Government in order to travel to the country.

Likewise, this system will apply to those who currently don't require a visa for traveling.

"The implementation of this measure is a fundamental step for eliminating Canadian visas for Mexicans," mentioned the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs.

"This is the result of diplomatic dialogue, deepening the relationship between the countries over the last two years and a joint effort of its authorities to create a mutual trust."

Previously, the Canadian government had implemented the requirement of a "temporal resident visa" for any Mexican who wanted to to travel to the country beginning in 2009. At the time the restriction was implemented due to the increasing amount of request for immigration to Canada they were receiving, and fears of more Mexican migrants skipping the U.S. and heading to its northern neighbor instead.

Aside from Mexico, countries such as Brazil, Bulgaria and Romania will be able to enjoy this new measure.
