Former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) has issued a call for international solidarity, urging the public to support the people of Cuba through donations as the island grapples with a severe economic and humanitarian crisis.
According to reports from Grupo Milenio, the former president emphasized that the current hardships affecting the Caribbean nation are taking the heaviest toll on its most vulnerable populations. He stressed the need for direct assistance and reaffirmed the importance of standing with Cuba during this difficult period.
López Obrador has long advocated for Mexico to maintain a humanitarian posture toward Cuba, particularly in light of the impact of economic sanctions and the widespread scarcity of basic goods.
He has consistently argued that aid efforts should prioritize the well-being of ordinary citizens over political considerations, underscoring the value of people-to-people cooperation.
A History of Bilateral Support
During his tenure from 2018 to 2024, López Obrador’s administration delivered multiple shipments of aid to Cuba, including humanitarian supplies and specialized personnel for emergency response, as part of broader bilateral cooperation agreements.
These efforts, however, have drawn a mixed reaction within Mexican political circles. While some applaud the gestures of solidarity, others have raised questions about the use of public resources and whether such assistance aligns with national priorities.
