Balboa Park’s beloved December Nights festival is adding a new, cozy attraction to its lineup this year: the “Après Tavern,” a European alpine-themed pop-up bar designed to be a festive retreat for adults.
Set to open in the heart of the Plaza de Panamá (1450 El Prado, San Diego, 92101), the tavern will offer visitors aged 21 and over a warm, mountain-lodge experience during the holidays. The venue will feature craft beverages, seasonal food, and a dedicated space to unwind.
Inspired by the charming ski villages of the Alps, the Après Tavern will be transformed into a winter wonderland complete with twinkling lights, snowy pines, and rustic décor. Guests can relax in specially designed lounging areas, take photos against picturesque backdrops, and even enjoy a unique offering of hot beer.

For concertgoers, the tavern’s location provides a prime viewing spot. It is situated adjacent to the plaza’s main stage, which will feature a performance by singer Frankie J. on Saturday, December 6 at 7:00 p.m., allowing patrons to enjoy the show with a drink in hand.
Recognizing the festival’s immense popularity, organizers have also added a preview night. The Après Tavern will open a day early on Friday, December 5th, from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., giving visitors a chance to experience the holiday cheer ahead of the weekend crowds.
The main operating hours for the Après Tavern will be Saturday, December 6th, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., as part of the wider December Nights festivities at Balboa Park.
