MEXICO.- AT&T purchased Iusacell a few days ago, and many have omitted a very important outcome of this union: AT&T´s purpose to install the first unified mobile network in North America, which would bring a drastic change to the market.
We mentioned this on previous notes, but..how would it work?
There aren't many details about costs, when o or what it´s really about, but the Federal Institute of Telecommunications (FIT) announced that the purchase of Iusacell was approved for 2,500,000 dollars, undoing the union between Grupo Salinas and Televisa, and taking them out of the cellphone market (a requirement from the new reform of telecommunications and competivity).
Thereupon, AT&T could implement what is now being called "North American Mobile Service", with the potential of reuniting up to 400,000,000 clients across the continent.
"Iusacell gives us the unique opportunity of creating the first North American Mobile Service, with an area that covers more than 400,000,000 clients and businesses in Mexico and the United States," said AT&T´s CEO, Randall Stephenson in a statement after the purchase was announced. "It doesn't matter in which country you are or from which country you are calling , it will be just one network, a one client experience."
Reuters explains that the Iusacell mainly consist on Televisa selling their half to Ricardo Salinas Pliego´s group, so he can sale the entire company to AT&T, along with its 86 millions of mobile clients. This will be the first United States company that can offer coverage to its clients outside the country.
Same goes for its Mexican clients.
