A Smart & Final employee stated:
People come and purchase up to $400 pesos ($20 dollars) of avocado and it is selling normally.
According to the Secretariat of Economy the avocado price increase is due to lack of production and inflation nationwide; a considerable change has been observed compared to 2021 prices. Last year, avocado was sold in prices ranging from $50 to 60 Mexican pesos ($2.50 – $3.00 dollars). In 2022, it has increased beyond $100 pesos.

According to the Metropolitan Center of Economic and Business Information (CEMDI) , Tijuana is currently ranked fifth nationwide in highest annual inflation rate with 9.02%, on a list with 42 Mexican municipalities.
It should be noted that according to the Federal Consumer Agency (PROFECO), Tijuana has one of the 5 most expensive supermarkets in northern Mexico: Soriana Súper at Colonia Libertad, where the basic basket is almost $1,000 pesos.
Even though the price of avocado has increased beyond $100 Mexican pesos in several supermarkets, there are other marts, supply centers, and fruit and vegetable stands one can get a kilo of avocado for less than $100 pesos.
