The Baja California government has formalized an emergency support program for durum wheat producers in the Mexicali Valley, offering 1,500 pesos per hectare to eligible farmers.
The agreement, signed by Governor Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda, is the result of sustained dialogue with the agricultural sector and reflects the administration’s commitment to safeguarding the livelihoods of farming families amid ongoing challenges in the countryside.
Governor Marina del Pilar emphasized that the direct aid is designed to cushion the impact of declining crop yields in Valle de Mexicali.
“This aid is a recognition of those who till our land and is a step toward ensuring that farming remains sustainable and continues to bring well-being to families across the region,” the governor said.
Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mónica Vargas Núñez, announced that the government will immediately begin compiling applicant files in order to expedite payments.
Representing the State Wheat Producers Council, Horacio Gómez Carranza expressed appreciation for the government’s openness to dialogue. He highlighted the early disbursement of funds as a crucial factor in helping producers address their needs and maintain continuity in their operations.
Unlike previous years when subsidies were calculated per ton of production, this year’s assistance will be distributed uniformly to all qualifying growers.
This marks the fourth consecutive year that the Baja California government has extended support to the wheat sector, reinforcing its pledge to remain a reliable partner to agricultural communities and keeping communication channels open to address the evolving needs of the region’s farming industry.
