Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda highlighted during her morning press conference that San Felipe has become one of the state’s primary fishing and aquaculture production regions, accounting for 37% of the industry’s total output.

The governor emphasized that this achievement is a direct result of strategic programs that have improved the well-being of hundreds of families engaged in this economic activity. Around 580 small vessels, organized into 60 fishing cooperatives, operate in San Felipe reflecting the industry’s vitality and the state government’s commitment to its development.

“Many people have benefited from the programs we’ve implemented, such as Pescando con el Corazón (Fishing with Heart), which began in 2024, among others that have had a very positive impact on the entire community of San Felipe and the fishing industry,” she stated.

She announced that this program will be expanded in 2025, incorporating a new component for larger vessels, where fishermen can access up to 200,000 pesos for equipment and maintenance, prioritizing regions like San Felipe and San Quintín.

Additionally, aid ranging from 15,000 to 200,000 pesos will be available for maintenance and equipment for sport fishing enthusiasts, reaffirming the Baja California government’s commitment to those who depend on the sea for their livelihood.

Responsible Use of Sea Resources Prioritized for San Felipe’s Economic Growth

Baja California’s Minister of Fishing and Aquaculture, Alma Rosa García Juárez, highlighted initiatives like the Blue Economy program, which prioritizes the responsible use of sea resources to boost San Felipe’s economy as the region’s fishing production reaches 14,364 tons, valued at 349 million pesos.

She noted that from 2022 to date, over 640 financial grants totaling 10.2 million pesos have been awarded, benefiting 303 women and 634 men engaged in commercial fishing, sport fishing, and aquaculture, totaling 937 beneficiaries. Another achievement is the promotion of sport fishing through events such as the “Torneo del Día del Marino” and “Dos Mares”, which have generated significant economic spillover for the community, amounting to nearly 1.5 million pesos.

Governor Marina del Pilar also mentioned that, as part of the “Corazones, Transformación que se ve, Futuro que se Siente” (Hearts, Visible Transformation, A Future You Can Feel) program, requests and needs from the San Felipe community have been addressed. One example is the rehabilitation of the city’s sports complex, where approximately 60 million pesos will be invested to upgrade facilities, including a boxing gym, a soccer field, a running track, a long jump area, and more.

Pier Cleanup Launched Under Beach Conservation National Strategy

The governor also referenced the launch of the National Beach and Coastal Cleanup and Conservation Strategy, which took place simultaneously in San Felipe during President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s morning press conference. Over 500 young people enthusiastically participated in cleaning the boardwalk.

She underscored the importance of this initiative, which began on World Environment Day. This effort is part of an ambitious and urgent goal to eliminate 100% of plastics from beaches and coasts across the country within the next five years.

“We are very pleased to have been one of the states invited to speak at the president’s morning press conference about what we have been doing and our commitment to keeping our beaches clean and plastic-free to preserve our ecosystem, marine flora, and fauna,” the governor concluded.
