In an effort to guide and establish clear communication channels with the natural market of Southern California, the Baja California Secretariat of Tourism recently hosted a direct promotional event in Downtown San Diego.

The initiative aims to spotlight the state’s extensive network of certified providers and accredited quality facilities.

Organized through the State Coordination of Health and Wellness Tourism in partnership with the Baja Health Cluster, the meeting underscored the diverse range of offerings featured in the Excellence Catalog for this sector.

Baja California’s Medical Offerings

The catalog recognizes top-tier experts from Tijuana, Mexicali, Ensenada, and Playas de Rosarito, while encompassing a variety of medical specialties, wellness experiences, and complementary tourism services.

Miguel Ángel Badiola Montaño, Secretary of Tourism, emphasized that this presentation is part of an intensive agenda being carried out simultaneously on both sides of the California border.

The primary goal is to foster transparent and direct dialogue between qualified professionals and visitors in Baja California seeking services of recognized global standing.

Badiola Montaño further highlighted Baja California’s considerable strength in medical tourism, citing its deep pool of medical talent, modern infrastructure, and a growing number of providers committed to quality and certification.

“Our responsibility is to bring that offering to new audiences and generate the conditions so that this trust translates into more visitors, greater economic activity, and, with it, shared well-being,” he stated.

The state’s value proposition rests on geographic proximity, bilingual care in Spanish and English, services from certified professionals, and a comprehensive experience.

Guides and Service Routes

During the session, the Baja California delegation presented detailed guides and service routes, along with specialized digital platforms for consulting medical experts.

They also showcased the region’s rich gastronomic, cultural, touristic, hotel, and family entertainment options, all designed to enhance mobility and enrich the overall patient journey.

National and State Tourism Registry

Badiola Montaño reaffirmed his agency’s commitment to assisting providers in obtaining the National and State Tourism Registry, as well as in pursuing quality seals and distinctions that guarantee high standards in hygiene, sustainability, modernization, and service.

Baja California has become the leading national reference in health and wellness tourism.

The strategies spearheaded by Badiola Montaño’s Secretariat of Tourism have also been adopted by the Federal Government as a blueprint for developing similar plans in other border regions.

San Diego, A Strategic Market for Baja California

Arón Ureña Zaragoza, state coordinator of Health and Wellness Tourism, underscored the strategic importance of San Diego County, citing its geographical proximity, large population, and natural affinity with Baja California.

With more than 3.3 million residents, at least 34% of whom are of Hispanic origin, the region maintains a strong connection with the state, driven by ease of mobility and growing confidence in Baja California’s diverse service offerings.

Baja California boasts a robust array of medical services, backed by outstanding professionals, certified hospitals, and quality care that consistently meets the expectations of international patients.

“We came to California to share that strength and show the capabilities that allow us to consolidate ourselves as a reliable destination for medical and health tourism,” he said.

Medical Tourism’s Numbers in the Region

Medical tourism generates an economic impact of more than $2 billion annually and attracts approximately 2.8 million visitors each year.

Key areas of consultation include plastic surgery, bariatric surgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, dentistry, fertility treatments, and oncology.

The region’s medical tourism industry is heavily driven by the North American market: eight out of every ten patients (81%) come from the United States with a strong presence from California, Arizona, and Nevada while 16% travel from Canada.

This competitive edge is further reinforced by infrastructure and logistical advantages such as the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) pedestrian bridge, the preferential Medical Lane, and certification and professionalization programs for health providers.
