Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda led a large-scale free surgery and optometric consultation event in Mexicali, where she announced that the state has become a national reference point for cataract treatment and eye care. Since she took office, more than 4,500 procedures have been performed.

“This is one of the most meaningful programs we offer through the state government. A completely free initiative that gives people back their sight,” she said.

During the event, the governor oversaw the evaluation and surgery of over 200 seniors diagnosed with cataracts and other optometric conditions. These services are part of ongoing efforts by the Baja California Secretariat of Health.

“Many grandparents have already received their cataract surgery. I always ask them, ‘How much did you pay?’ and they say, ‘Nothing,'” she added.

Authorities also reported that more than 65,000 optometric consultations have been provided through the state’s Health Caravans initiative, which brings specialized services to communities with limited access to care.

The program operates across all municipalities and is designed for people over 60 who lack social security and experience vision impairment. Eligible individuals may visit their local health jurisdiction or attend a Health Caravan to receive evaluation, pre-op testing, and follow-up care leading to surgery.

Speaking on behalf of those who have benefited from cataract procedures, Amala González Solorio thanked the governor for supporting the program and encouraged continued outreach to communities in Valle de Mexicali, a region with a long history of sustaining Baja California.

Horacio Ham Puyol, director of the Mexicali Outpatient Surgery Unit, noted that since the facility opened in 2022, approximately 10,730 patients have received specialized evaluations. He urged residents to take advantage of services that not only treat medical conditions but also help restore independence and peace of mind for families.
