The delicate pink blooms of the cherry blossom are scheduled to make their annual return to Balboa Park next spring, heralding the comeback of one of San Diego’s most picturesque cultural events. The Japanese Friendship Garden & Museum has officially announced the 2026 Cherry Blossom Festival, set to take place from March 12 through March 15.

Inspired by the Japanese tradition of Hanami (the centuries-old custom of appreciating the fleeting beauty of flowers), the four-day festival transforms the garden into a vibrant celebration of Japanese culture and springtime renewal.

Shows & Activities

This year’s event promises an enriched lineup for all ages. Attendees can experience a diverse program featuring cultural shows, performances, and special guest presentations for the weekend of March 14 and 15.

New for 2026, organizers are introducing an illuminated lantern wall and several community art installations, designed to create captivating visual moments.

Families with children will find dedicated spaces with hands-on activities aimed at creatively introducing young minds to Japanese arts and traditions.

Traditional Food & Drinks

Visitors can explore a variety of authentic Japanese street food and snacks. For adults, the lower garden will host a serene Beer & Sake Garden, offering a peaceful retreat to sample traditional drinks amid the natural backdrop.

The festival will also feature a vendor alley in the upper garden, showcasing local crafts and Japan-inspired accessories. From there, visitors are invited to unwind on a stroll through the celebrated cherry blossom forest path, a favorite for photographers.
