In a historic moment, former President Bill Clinton appeared before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform this Friday to answer questions regarding his ties to deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein. The testimony, which lasted several hours, marked the first time in U.S. history that a former president has testified before Congress involuntarily.

Clinton adopted a notably less combative tone than his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who testified the previous day. In an opening statement released to the press, the former president firmly denied any awareness of Epstein’s criminal activities.

“I had no idea about the crimes Epstein was committing,” Clinton told the committee. “Even with the benefit of hindsight, I never saw anything that gave me cause for doubt.”

He also emphasized that he had ended his relationship with Epstein long before the financier’s abuses came to light.

Rather than appearing in Washington, both Bill and Hillary Clinton gave their depositions in Chappaqua, New York, near their home. While the Clintons had pushed for the proceedings to be public and televised, the interviews are being conducted behind closed doors though transcripts and, in Hillary Clinton’s case, video are expected to be released soon.

After months of resisting subpoenas, the Clintons agreed to testify before Congress, but only after facing mounting pressure from both Republicans and some Democrats on the House Oversight Committee, who threatened to pursue contempt of Congress charges.

The former president and former secretary of state had long dismissed the requests for their testimony as “invalid, unenforceable, and politically motivated.”

At the heart of the inquiry are Bill Clinton’s ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Lawmakers are focusing on his interactions with Epstein through the Clinton Global Initiative, where Epstein had connections, seeking to better understand the depth and nature of their relationship during that time.

Kentucky Congressman James R. Comer announced that Hillary Clinton’s full transcript and video testimony would be made public in the coming days.

Meanwhile, some House Democrats have raised questions about the scope of the investigation. While acknowledging that Bill Clinton’s associations warrant scrutiny, they argue that any serious inquiry into Epstein’s political connections should also include testimony from President Donald Trump, who has faced his own questions about past ties to Epstein.
