The judges presiding the case ruled the sentence for "disregarding public safety", as well as having mocked the religious figured of the country. We must remember that Muslim religion is one of the most strict religions that are practiced these days.
Badawi is being considered a political prisoner by "Amnesty International" which is why they are promoting a campaign for his release.

Even today, Islamic law tries to convey a message to society through the idea of "making an example"
Badawi's Lawyer, Waleed Abu Alkhai, mentioned that "the lashes could have been put aside, but in the Sharia (Islamic Law) this is a sign that the judge wants to insult him". An appeal is currently being worked on.
This is not the only case in which Islamic law is being pushed in a radical manner, there was a situation in March where Amina, a young Tunisian woman would be sentenced to death after a protest in which she bared her naked torso, Amina belongs to the feminist group known as Femen.
