Drivers using southbound Interstate 805 to travel from San Diego toward Tijuana may encounter delays due to overnight closures and lane restrictions in Chula Vista, part of an ongoing road improvement project.
Caltrans and the San Diego Association of Governments are carrying out most of the closures overnight, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., along sections of I-805 between Telegraph Canyon Road and Bonita Road, including the underpass at East Naples Street. The work includes bridge repairs, construction of sound walls, and the expansion of auxiliary lanes.
Impact on cross-border commuters
Drivers crossing through the San Ysidro Port of Entry may face additional congestion during these hours. Officials recommend allowing extra travel time or considering alternate routes to avoid delays. While detours and signage have been installed to guide traffic, the combination of border traffic and construction is expected to increase travel times.

A detour will route drivers from Melrose Avenue to East Palomar Street and then to Oleander Avenue.

The project is part of a broader effort to improve safety and traffic flow along I-805 in southern San Diego County. It carries an estimated cost of $33 million and is expected to continue for several months.
Authorities say nearby residents and businesses should expect increased noise, dust, and lighting during construction hours.
